After World War 1, many countries were not left the necessary resources to recuperate from the devastating effects of the war. With their countries left in ruin, citizens in places such as Germany, Italy and the Soviet Union, looked for leaders who could promise them a brighter future. This desperation created a clear and easy path for many radical nationalists, such as Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini and Joseph Stalin to take power and leadership in their countries. They fed off the fear and poverty of their citizens, reassuring them that once they were in full power, they would be able to fix all of the problems that antagonized them. These mental strategies, combined with the horrible economic depressions faced by these countries, allowed these dictators to rise to power.

The invasion of Normandy, otherwise known as D-Day or Operation Overlord, played a critical role in the Allies victory in Europe. In order for the Allies to gain an advantage, to gain a point of location in which they could use to efficiently attack Germany, the sacrifice given by American, British and Canadian soldiers was necessary. While the price of casualties was expensive, the toll of human life throughout this battle was fever high, it was all for the good of eventual end to WWII.

Truman, despite the horrible casualties, was justified in dropping the two atomic on Nagasaki and Hiroshima. The Japanese posed a great threat to both the United States, and its allies. No matter what was negotiated, Japan would not step down. Even after the first bomb was dropped, killing almost 140,000 Japanese citizens, Japan refused to stop fighting. It took another atomic bomb and intense debate among the Japanese government to finally come to an agreement to cease fighting against the U.S. and other Allied countries. The ceasefire, and eventual resolution between the United States and Japan would not have happened, or taken much longer with many more casualties, if not for the atomic bomb that was dropped.

During WWII many men had to enlist to fight in the army. Previously, women had been denied or discriminated against when it came to jobs considered to be in the field of manual labor. However, because there were a shortage of men to run the factories, women become a greater part of the workforce. This translates to after the war as well. Women continued to hold positions in these because they proved that women could work just as well as men.
